Music at Charlton Mackrell School

Charlton Mackrell is a very musical school. We encourage all pupils to contribute to school music in some way, whether through singing or by playing an instrument and joining the school orchestra. We firmly believe that studying music from an early age helps develop concentration, co-ordination and confidence. It is also fun!  We are very lucky to have Miss Botterill as our Music Leader, as she is a chorister and talented musician, playing numerous instruments, which include, amongst others, the bagpipes, piano and saxophone!

School Choirs

All of our CM children enjoy singing and, together, form our whole school choir, which meets weekly to learn singing techniques and to practise its wide repertoire of modern and classic music.  We have now taken part twice in the amazing Young Voices mass choir of 6000 children held at the O2 Arena.

At the beginning of the academic year, Miss Botterill auditions the whole school to become members of our chamber choir.  This choir also meets once a week during curriculum time. The children sing at regular events, including the CLP Advent Concert in Somerton. Advent Concert in Somerton.

Singing also takes place in every Collective Worship and special church festivals and services.

The School Orchestra

Our long-established school orchestra meets every week.   Miss Botterill leads the orchestra, which is now 35 strong, including a large number of violinists as well as cellists and a double bass player.  Orchestra highlights over the years include performing at many, many music spectaculars, reaching the regional finals of the Music for Youth competition, taking part in a workshop at school with conductor and TV and radio presenter Charles Hazlewood and playing at an international convention at Kingston University.  We are very proud that the orchestra accompanies each carol at our Christmas church services.

Instrument Tuition

Hurricane Class (Year 3 and Year 4 children) enjoy weekly strings lessons led by Miss Botterill and a tutor from Somerset Music. These lessons and instrument hire are funded by the school, with some funding made available through the Wider Opportunities Music scheme and school funds.

There are regular opportunities throughout the year for parents to hear how their children are getting on and the Hurricane Strings orchestra played for their parents at a Christmas Celebration Praise.

Flute, violin, clarinet, piano, guitar, drums, singing, saxophone, bagpipes
Individual and small-group tuition is also available for any pupils interested in these. The lessons take place during or after school time, by arrangement. Children soon realise that to achieve success in music, they need to practise regularly, so we ask parents to encourage this and the result is that all children pass their examinations, often with distinction!  Parents are required to make a financial contribution towards the costs of these lessons and we ask them to please give at least half a term’s notice if their child wishes to stop having the lessons.

If you are interested in your child taking up music lessons, please speak to Miss Botterill.

We are fortunate to have a small fund called the Brymer Trust, which supports music tuition. Parents may apply for support from the Brymer Trust - please ask Miss Botterill or a member of the office team for further information.
