We are very proud of our school's achievements in sport and consequently, we are delighted that we have achieved the GOLD award in the Sainsbury's Schools Games.
To date, our teams and individuals have excelled in the following sports - gymnastics, netball, cross country, athletics and swimming with many of our teams reaching area finals.
We are committed to encouraging the children to lead healthy lifestyles, with great emphasis on everyone's participation in sport. We are certainly a sporty school and although small, this fact has not prevented us from entering sports competitions alongside much larger school where we achieve well! As members of the Community Learning Partnership, we are lucky to have many sporting opportunities run by a professional team of sports teachers and our own Mrs Carter-Rice and Mrs Hael are very experienced coaches. This year, as last year, we have entered a football and netball league, which ensures that our teams will be very busy!  We play regularly against other CLP schools, at Huish Episcopi Academy. Competitions are not restricted to our oldest children, with our younger squads enjoying success. The cross country season is always well supported, with many of our hardy runners enjoying success and going on to represent our area at regional level. We also enter hockey and tag rugby competitions. Mrs Carter-Rice also enters two or three squads of our younger gymnasts to the annual Orchard Gymnastic competition in Yeovil.
Swimming plays a key role in the life of our school as it is our school aim for each child to be a confident and proficient swimmer by the time they leave Charlton Mackrell. To realise this aim, children swim two terms out of three during the school year, for the whole of their time at our school.  Consequently, children are taught swimming from Early Years to the end of Year 6.  Our swimming teams often achieve great success at our local swimming galas in the summer term.  Parents assist financially by paying towards the cost of coach transport to Strode pool, Street.
During the year, we also benefit from coaching from visiting sports professionals, including cricket in the summer term.  To inspire our children, we try to introduce them to top flights sports events and this year, our older children will be enjoying a day at Somerset Country Cricket Club in Taunton.  Our netball team also experienced a wonderful display of superb netball when they visited Team Bath.
Our children enjoy their minimum two hours of sports throughout the year and most also stay to after school sports clubs.
As Young Sports Leaders, our older children  have opportunities to get involved with planning our Inspire team intra-school events and take on responsibilities, such as helping the younger children and organising equipment.  The children report to Mrs Carter-Rice.
The government funded PE grant has enabled us to employ professional sports people to provide their services for staff training as well as the delivery of high quality PE to the children, eg cricket and tennis.  To view our plans for using the PE grant, please visit Key Information - PE grant.
