In all areas of the curriculum, we aim to engage, motivate and stretch each child.  We do this by providing stimulating lessons that are purposeful, enjoyable and responsive to each child.  Whenever possible, the children are active in their learning and we aim to give a wide range of real experiences to broaden the children’s thinking.
Sharing ideas is a core part of the learning process for all ages and the children are involved in questioning, explaining their observations and discussions with their peers and teachers.  We encourage our pupils to use their imaginations and to ‘have a go’.  We believe that being self-reliant and flexible in their thinking will be a lifelong asset.

Teaching and Learning Policy WORKING July2018.pdf  The academic year 2018 - 2019 falls into cycle 1.  Below are details of what each class will be covering during the Autumn Term

Class 1

Maths

We continue to follow the White Rose Hub scheme which encourages children to visualise, practically show and draw in a pictorial form and explain a calculation, together with reasoning and applying to a problem solving situation. The aim of this is that children begin to have a greater depth of understanding.
 
This term will be place value before applying our knowledge of place value to addition and subtraction.
 

English

 Wherever possible we link our English to our topic.  In doing so we will cover non-fiction, poetry and narrative which will inlcude stories and character/setting descriptions.   Within our English units we will cover a range of grammar objectives relevant to the individual year groups.
 
Accurate spelling of high frequency and common exception words continue to be a focus across both schools.  It is important children apply their spelling knowledge in their independent writing.

Science

 The first half term we will be continuing to look at everyday materials and how to work scientifically by - designing a house for 'The Fourth Little Pig'.  The houses will be tested.
 
We will also be looking at seasonal changes, focussing on Auutmn

 

Computing

 

We continue to follow the ActivBYTE and ELIM planning written by Somerset where the children work towards whole school awards.  Linked with online safety we will be learning if we can trust everything we read on the internet. 

 

RE

Our first half term topic is ‘What do Christians believe God is like?’ and we will be finding out what parables are and how they help us to understand God’s ideas. We will also be looking at different types of prayer.
 
Our Christian Value this term is Thankfulness.
 

Topic - History/Geography/Art/Design and Technology

 
We will start the term looking at different types of weather in the UK and around the world.  We will take on the role of weather forecasters as well as learning how to keep ourselves safe in extreme weathers.  After half term we will be focussing on Africa, comparing and contrasting it to the UK.

 

PE

 This half term, our outdoor activitiy will take the form of Forest Schools.  We will continue to develop Fundemental Skills throughout the week

 

Music

 

We will begin music by exploring sounds. We will be listening to the sounds around us and creating some of our own.
 

Class 2

Maths

We continue to follow the White Rose Hub scheme and as a class we will build and deepen our understanding of fractions, area/perimeter, multiplication and division this spring term. The children will not only have opportunities to increase their fluency of  maths but also will have opportunities to reason and explain their thinking. 

The childen are also focusing on the speed of their mental calculations and are encouraged to know all their times tables up to 12x by the end of year 4.

English

Wherever possible we link our English to our topic work or R.E. so this term we will be writing about the Rainforest. We will also be reading the book 'The Iron Man' Ted Hughes.
We also will be focussing on settings in a story and the importance of adding detail and using the correct grammar.

Science

This term we will learning about Magnets and Forces.

Computing

We will continue to consider how to keep ourselves safe on-line following the ActivBYTE and ELIM planning. This half term we will be having fun learning to write simple computer games using SCRATCH.


RE 

 As Church schools we will continue listening and discussing stories from the Bible throughout the week.  We follow the Understanding Christianity planning and as class 1 we are thinking about and discussing, "What is the good news Jesus brings?” ​The focus being on the GOSPEL (good news).

 

Topic - History/Geography/Art/Design and Technology

 Our topic this term is​ the Rainforest. We will be learning about tropical rainforests, the animal inhabitants and the climate found in the tropics. We will compare a British forest with the Amazon rainforest and explore some of the conservation issues surrounding the destruction of rainforest habitats​.

 

 

PE

This is taught on a Mondy led by 1610.

The children also have t​he opportunity to represent the school in Friday football this term which is a weekly friendly indoor tournament against local schools.

We will also have swimming lessons every afternoon for a week at a local pool just after half a term.

French

The children will have the opportunity to become familiar with the basics of French, counting, meeting and greeting as well as learning colours, phrases when on holiday, eating, shopping throughout their two years in class 2.

Music

The children continue to have a ukulele lesson on a Tuesday.   In addition to learning an instrument the children learn to read music, identify rhyme and beat as well as discuss tempo and pitch.
