Curriculum Provision

The National Curriculum (2014) sets out what we have to teach in our school, it doesn’t tell us how we have to teach it.

At Kingston St Mary Church of England Primary School we aim to provide a broad, balanced education for all within a Christian framework.

Our planning for the children’s learning experiences allow for different learning styles and will encourage children to think, explore, take risks, feel safe, make mistakes, work together and develop independence. It will give them the tools to be confident children, ready for the next stage in their life journey.
Two Year Rolling Programme
We have mapped out our curriculum following a two year rolling programme with Reception & Key Stage1, Years 3 & 4 and Years 5 & 6 having separate curriculum maps. This will ensure coverage across the school and still allow for creativity and cross-curricular planning.
Our curriculum planning is sufficiently flexible to enable pupils to have some influence over the direction a topic may take; to ask their own questions and to find the answers.
For details of the termly planning see Termly Overviews on the individual class pages.
English and Maths
We have adopted the ‘Read, Write Inc’ phonics programme to give our pupils the best possible start to their learning.  Our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children take part in daily phonics lessons. Children in Key Stage 2 will continue to participate in phonics lessons if they have not reached the required level of attainment.
Communicating our Curriculum to Parents
Our curriculum maps will be on the school website along with a Termly Overview for the current term. A Class Curriculum Letter will be sent home each term; this provides an overview of the learning planned for each subject and guidance on how parents can support their child’s learning at home.
