And finally, the Somerset County Youth Choir and Show Choir will be performing at Cedars Hall, Wells on Friday 25 August at 7.30pm. Singing Festivals - Summer 2017

Singing Festivals were held in Sedgemoor, Taunton, Mendip and West Somerset during July giving pupils from over 30 schools the opportunity to perform in front of an audience of family and friends. Each event ended with all the schools joining together to present a massed choral piece which was greatly enjoyed by both the choirs and the audience.

Each Festival Festival is led by one of our Singing Leaders who very often has worked with the schools involved at some point during the year so it is wonderful for them to see the results of all their hard work and to see how much the children enjoy taking part.

If you would like to take part in the 2018 series of Singing Festivals please contact Somerset Music to register your interest.

Primary Music Conference 2017

Our Primary Music Conference took place at Dillington House on Friday 12 May. The day was a great success and enjoyed by all who attended. The key note presentation 'On Cue', a Musical Futures approach to creative music-making, was delivered by Kirsten Wordley, Deputy Director, Somerset Music and was followed by a wide choice of workshops including 'Junk Band - make a percussion ensemble from scratch'  and 'What can I do with my music trolley next?'.  The drumming workshops were a great success too with lots of delegates commenting that they were looking forward to using their new found skills in the classroom.

The day provided an opportunity for delegates to network with colleagues from other schools to exchange ideas and to meet the Somerset Music management team and tutors.

Feedback has been extremely positive - "Great day, lots of inspiring workshops. I can't wait to use it in class!", "This is the first music conference I have attended and it was fantastic. I feel really inspired", "Excellent. Brilliant ideas - great chance to compare notes with other teachers. Thanks to everyone".

A note for your diaries - the date for the 2018 conference is Friday 18 May 2018. We look forward to seeing you there!

 Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra

On 20th & 21st February Somerset Music were pleased to welcome a trio from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra to visit schools in the county. The trio visited schools in Wellington and the Yeovil area where they gave a performance to pupils. They played a variety of pieces, including Peter and the Wolf and the Pink Panther theme, and answered questions from the pupils about their instruments and their jobs. The visit gave the children the opportunity to experience high quality live music by professional musicians, something that they would not normally be able to see. As pupils in all of the schools visited learn an instrument with Somerset Music it also gave them a chance to see something they can aspire to should they continue to play their instrument.

Sons of Pitches

On Monday 6th March, as part of the Singing Strategy for Somerset, King Arthurs Community School in Wincanton hosted a vocal workshop given by the award winning acappella group ‘Sons of Pitches’. In November 2015 the group won the BBC2 The Naked Choir hosted by Gareth Malone. Since then they have toured extensively across the UK and Europe and also deliver vocal workshops in schools and community groups as they believe that acappella singing is a great way to encourage creativity and to boost the confidence of both adults and children alike.

Over 120 pupils from King Arthurs Community School, Westfield Academy, Ansford Academy, Oakfield Academy and Selwood Academy were involved in the workshop with the Sons of Pitches where they were able to build a song with the group from scratch. The afternoon culminated in a performance by the Sons of Pitches including the work that the pupils had done throughout the afternoon. It was a wonderful opportunity for pupils to see a nationally renowned group of such high quality singing, giving them something to aspire to and to enthuse their love for singing.
