 Welcome back Griffins!

Our topic for the whole of this term is "Ancient Egypt".

We have learned about Tutankhamen and how his tomb was found by Howard Carter.  We also found out about some of the Gods and Goddesses and wrote our own myths based on the Egyptian Creation story.  We shared an assembly with the whole school and our parents and in it perfomed a gory 'mummification'.   We have loved finding out about the Egyptians.

We made clay models of the Sphinx in Art and worked on individual projects as part of our Homework.

In Science, we have been learning about Forces.

Our current topic is Materials and their properties.  We have investigated dissolving and created fair tests in small groups.  We have also found out different ways to separate materials including using sieving, filters, magnets and evaporation.

St Benedict's Elections.

On Thursday 8th June, St Benedict’s held its own Election.  The children of Griffin class formed 4 political parties and worked together on creating manifestos which incorporated global, local and school issues.   Each party presented their ideas in an Assembly to the whole school and in the afternoon everyone in school voted.  The winning party has the whole of the next academic year to put their ideas into practice.  The children all worked incredibly hard in their teams – well done everyone!

The winning party is: Global 7

This term we will be focussing on

Earth and Space.

We will be looking at how scientific evidence proved that the Earth was spherical and considering the ideas behind the Geocentric versus Heliocentric theories.  In addition, we will be looking in detail at each of the planets in our solar system aswell as work on day and night, the movement of the moon and the work of atronauts.

In Literacy, we will be looking at the biography of Tim Peake (and writing out our own) and in History, finding out about the Space Race.

This week, Zoolab came to visit each class. We got to find out about and touch animals from different habitats and find out how they move.

Our topic for the Spring Term is Our Local Area

This is a Lottery Funded Project called "Trade Roots" which teaches children about their local area.

Jacqui (from the project) came to school to teach us about the local area. We made a timeline of the local area dating back to The Bronze Age.

Radstock Railway                                                                      Writhlington Colliery
Next week, we are off to Radstock Museum to find out in our more detail about local area.  We also have Bryn, a former Miner, coming to share his experiences with us.

In Numeracy, we are working on Fractions, Decimals and Percentages.
In Literacy, our Talk 4 Writing project is Persuasive Writing.  We are writing letters to Robin, persuading him to change his outfit.
