We are very excited to have introduced Forest School to Winsham School.  We have a great school field which is the ideal location for us to go out and explore, have fun and learn.
In the 1990s a group of nursery nurses from Bridgwater College, visited Denmark to look at the pre-school system. The open air culture is seen as a way of life in Scandinavia and early years education.  The Bridgwater nursery nurses returned enthused and they started their own 'Forest School' with children attending the college creche.
Forest School is an inspirational concept providing learning opportunities through practical activities in an outdoor environment.  Children enjoy the freedom to explore and experience the natural world in all seasons and in all weathers.   Forest School embraces an approach of nurturing, supporting and developing the self-esteem of participants.  It is an ideal environment in which to develop innovation, problem solving, risk taking, creativity and teamwork.  Forest school should be a long term process with regular contact with a local environment over the seasons and by doing this learning and then care for the natural world is integrated.
Forest School Sessions are inclusive and planned to allow all pupils, including those with Special Educational needs participate fully.  Children who can find classroom learning difficult normally thirve in the Forest School environment.
