At Winsham, we love maths!  In both classes, there is a daily maths session of usually about an hour.  We teach maths using a guided group approach which means that every child gets to work closely with an adult every day.  The sessions are planned with consideration for where the children are in their learning, where they need to go and their ability in a particular topic.  Staff assess children’s progress daily and use this information to inform the next day’s teaching.
Each area of maths is taught over a series of weeks, allowing all children to grasp the concepts and feel secure whilst ensuring that able children have opportunities to go into more depth, investigating general statements, reasoning and solving problems in a wide variety of problems.
There are plenty of opportunities to experience practical maths, as well as occasions to use their mathematical knowledge and skills in other subjects across the curriculum, particularly science.
